How Well Do Parents Work with The School? is a specifically designed self-evaluation resource that supports parents in developing and improving their working partnerships with the school (Parent Council, Parent Forums, Parent Groups) to improve children’s learning and outcomes for all.

This comprehensive resource is presented as a published and eResource and offers a solution focused approach in building strong foundations of trust, mutual respect and professionalism between staff and parents. The resource focuses on the following identified areas including, parent council/body current roles and responsibilities, parental involvement in school practices and planning, parents’ awareness of curriculum. The resource also offers three survey questionnaires that can be used by the school parent council/ body to gather the views of the wider parent forum in areas of general knowledge of the role of parents in school, curricular support and health and wellbeing. It also includes ideas on how parents can support their children’s learning at home.

The resource will:

  • assist schools in clarifying the role of parents and the importance of productive partnership working
  • assist in developing a shared vision and values within partnership working
  • encourage parents to offer their skills and experiences to improve the learning outcomes for children
  • strengthen links between parents, pupils and school staff
  • identify areas for developing and improving parental involvement and partnership working to improve learning outcomes for children and young people

The resource supports How Good Is Our School 4 (HGIOS 4) (Scotland 2015.) and also takes account of ‘The evaluation schedule for the inspection of maintained schools and academies’, Ofsted, 2012. (UK)

This resource supports the Getting it right for every child agenda (GIRFEC Scotland and Every Child Matters, UK).
